There’s something about a classic roadside motel that sparks nostalgia—a welcoming sign glowing against the evening sky, the charm of a wood-paneled lobby, and the promise of adventure just beyond the front door. In the Whiteface Region, that vintage road-trip magic is alive and well, offering travelers a chance to step back in time while still enjoying all the modern comforts they expect and enjoy treating themselves to. Here, cozy motor inns and mid-century lodges have been lovingly maintained, blending their retro appeal with updated amenities and irreplaceable Adirondack hospitality, creating the perfect balance of old-school charm and contemporary convenience.
These are the kinds of places where there may not be a valet, but there is an owner who’s been around for decades, knows all the local hidden gem hiking trails, and can recommend the best restaurant for a craft beer on a relaxing evening.
Here are a few of our favorite retro spots and why we love them:
Adirondack Spruce Lodge
Conveniently located in central Wilmington, just a few minutes from attractions like Santa’s Workshop and Whiteface Mountain, Adirondack Spruce Lodge sits on the site of a former farm, long ago converted little by little into a hotel. Each room is decorated as a nod to the time period it was originally built in, with wonderful, modern touches like rain forest showers. But it's the owners and their friendly hospitality, help with itineraries, and tips on what to do that make the biggest difference to many travelers.
Wolfjaw Lodge
Originally known as the Alpine Country Inn & Suites, Wolfjaw Lodge has long been proud to be a “mom and pop” lodging destination that mixes comfort and enjoyment. Recently renovated and renamed Wolfjaw Lodge, this is a motel where you’ll find both guest rooms and family-oriented mini suites. The retro log cabin exterior (and moose lamps!) feels like something out of a classic road trip, while the modern rooms are bright, cheerful, and hip. Inside, find cute kitchenettes and woodstoves. Outside, indulge in lawn games and s’mores around the fire pit.
Ledge Rock at Whiteface
If you’re a fan of Whiteface Mountain, set your sights on this beauty. Ledge Rock at Whiteface is the only lodging right across the street from the mountain, making for convenient ski days and or summer adventures. You’ll be just steps from the action, but don’t let the location fool you. Ledge Rock offers a peaceful getaway with plenty of amenities to keep you comfortable. Their newly renovated suites will have you easing into mountain life in no time, with full kitchens and multiple bedrooms for groups. Steps from your suite you’ll find the game room (a clubhouse reminiscent of local hunting camps), an outdoor lean-to, and our favorite, the outdoor cooking areas. Grill up some steaks or hot dogs with the best view of Whiteface Mountain in the region!
Cadence Lodge at Whiteface
Family-owned and -operated, Cadence Lodge isn't a new kid on the block, but a recent renovation has given it a new, fun air while maintaining the classic feel that has kept travelers coming back to the motel for years. Breakfasts here are revered, and the on-site restaurant's great flavors and local produce bring in locals, too. Rooms blend modern comforts with retro ski decor and thoughtful little touches that make a big difference to outdoorsy travelers, like storage space for ski and bike gear! A lighted, heated outdoor pavilion is perfect for family fun, grilling, and recapping tales from a day of adventure.
Featured restaurant: The Hungry Trout
Residing in The Hungry Trout Resort, you’ll find a premier dining experience at The Hungry Trout Restaurant. Elevated dining meets all the comforts of lodge-luxury, featuring lighted waterfalls, majestic mountain views, and candlelit dinners. The menu highlights include fresh trout, seafood, and chargrilled steaks, but really their entire selection shines with stellar plates. Start with the Scallops Coquilles or Smoked Trout, then move on to entrees including the Tuscan Penne, Wild Mushroom Risotto, or the Free Range Venison Chop. To really immerse yourself in Adirondack living, consider ordering the Wilderness Guide Platter. Half campfire trout, grilled venison chop, and roast duck make up this feast. Of course, don’t forget to pair your meal with their incredible selection of wines.
